Devendra Mishra - Founder

Devendra Mishra

Founder — Product & Engineering

I built JilmilTalks because I wanted Indian children to grow up hearing stories the way generations before them did — with warmth, and without a screen in front of their eyes. Passing on culture and values through tales is one of India's oldest traditions, and I wanted today's kids to still have that. Voice technology has come a long way, so we spend real time — testing and re-testing — until a narration actually sounds warm enough for a child to fall in love with it. My wife and co-founder, Arpita, makes sure every single story earns that bar before a child ever hears it.

Co-founder — Stories & Review

I train our writers on what "safe and gentle" really means for each age group, then read every story myself, word by word, before a single line becomes audio. Once it's narrated, I listen to the whole thing again — checking tone, pacing, and pronunciation — because a child's ear catches things a page can't. Devendra is my husband and co-founder, but that doesn't buy any story an easier review — if it doesn't meet the bar, it doesn't go out, no exceptions.

Questions

Things parents ask us

What ages is JilmilTalks for?

Stories are grouped into age bands — 2–4 and 5–7 today — with pacing, vocabulary and length matched to each band. You pick the band when you set up your child's profile.

Is JilmilTalks free?

Yes — right now, the whole library, in all three languages, is free to play. No subscription and no card required.

Which languages does it support?

Stories are written and narrated in English, Hindi and Kannada.

Who writes the stories?

People do. Every story is written in each language, read and checked in full by a reviewer, and its narration is listened through by the reviewer together with a native speaker — then an admin gives final approval. Nothing reaches your child without passing every one of those checks. See the whole process above.

Are these AI narrated stories for kids?

The narration is AI; the writing never is. Every story is written by a person and reviewed by a person, and the AI voice we pick for each language is listened through in full before approval. That's how the stories stay soft, warmly narrated and expressive in Hindi, English and Kannada instead of sounding like a flat text-to-speech read.

What kind of stories are in the library?

Indian stories, mostly — Krishna and Hanuman, Panchatantra-style animal fables with a gentle moral, forest friends, and quiet grandmother tales. All of them are paced for bedtime rather than for excitement, so they wind your child down instead of waking them up.

What are some calming bedtime stories?

The calmest ones here are the quiet, low-stakes tales — a grandmother's lap story, a little rabbit and a red balloon, a moonlit walk with Krishna. No chase scenes, no loud finish: the pace slows toward the end and the last lines are a goodnight rather than a cliffhanger. If your child is already wound up, start with one of those rather than with a Hanuman adventure.

Which story is best for my child?

It depends on age and mood more than on the story itself. Pick the age band first — 2–4 or 5–7 — since pacing, vocabulary and length are matched to it, then pick the language your child hears most at home. Start with a free full-length story; if they ask for the same one again the next night, you've found the right band.

How is a story personalised for my child?

Your child hears their own name at key moments — the welcome, a beat inside the tale, and the goodnight ending — and they choose a sidekick friend to bring along.

Is my child's data safe?

There are no ads anywhere in the app. We collect only what the app needs to work, and you can delete your account and its data at any time from inside the app. The full details are in our privacy policy.
